New Beginnings

The start of the New Year is the beginning of a new era.

We have made it through 2005. What are your thoughts and feelings on the last year? Have you completed ambitions of your own or watched others achieve their dreams? How did this make you feel? What about your hopes and aspirations for the future? What would you like to see; world peace, global environmental issues addressed, aid for the third world increased or a decline in crime?

All these issues are something that we as a nation feel strongly about. But what does a new beginning mean to you? Maybe a new start in your life, a birth of a baby, a New Year’s resolution that you will not break! Or maybe you are just looking forward to what’s still to come.

Whatever your views are on new beginnings we want to know about them in the form of a poem.

Love

If you think you could demonstrate your feelings in the form of a poetic verse, we would love to hear from you. Dedicate your poems to the object of your desire whoever that might be; it could be the partner who adds zing to your life and twangs your heartstrings, or it might be someone you haven’t even approached yet who sets your pulse racing!

Now is the time for all you romantics out there to put pen to paper! Compose a poem that is from the heart, add a special dedication, and show that person in your life just how much you care about them.

Poems For MumPoems for Mum

Poems for Mum

Of all the friends we have in the world there is one who will always be there for us, supporting us and giving us advice no matter what we have done - that person is our Mum. For all the times our mothers have helped and supported us, how about giving something back?

We are looking for poems that reflect the essential role mothers play in our lives. To show just how much you care and appreciate them, we would like you to write a poem dedicated to your Mum.

Every Poem Tells a Story

Can you write a story in the form of a poem, with a beginning, a middle and an end in 30 lines or less? We are looking for poems which tell a story about anything. It could be fictitious like ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat’ or it could be based on a true story like Tennyson’s ‘Charge Of The Light Brigade’

Your poetic stories can be funny and make us laugh, or on the other hand they can be sad and bring a tear to our eye. So whether they’re funny, sad, fact or fiction we want to hear from you with your poetic tales.

Send your entries to us and mark your envelope 'PN Story Poem'.

Bedtime Poems & Prayers

‘As I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord, my soul to keep.
If I die before I wake,
I pray the Lord, my soul to take.’

A A Milne

Many people across the world pray each night, either using a version of this poem, The Lord’s Prayer, or reciting a personal prayer that asks for the well-being of family, friends and people in need.

What we would like you to do is write an original bedtime prayer or poem which could relate to you or others; or it could be used to lend comfort and understanding to those who need it.

Send your entries to us and mark your envelope 'TH Bedtime Poems'.

Test of Faith

‘Strong Son of God, immortal Love,
Whom we, that have not seen thy face,
By faith, and faith alone, embrace,
Believe where we cannot prove;’

Tennyson

It is often in our most darkest hours when we rely on God the most to give us the support we are searching for. We may seek absolution, we may ask him to guide us through darkened days, or simply we may look to him for consolation. It is in these times, we may find ourselves asking God ‘why?’, and find it difficult to comprehend his motives. Though it is hard to understand his divine plan, as our creator, are we in a position to question him?

Our faith may be tested in many ways, it is how we deal with these trials that determines the strength of our beliefs. We invite you to write a poem about those times in your life when your faith has been pushed to its limit, and how you overcame the hurdles put in your way.

Send your entries to us and mark your envelope 'TH Test of Faith'.

The Best Medicine

Laughing has become a necessity in today's busy and tiring way of life. Over the years, poetry has been used in many different forms and is often assumed to be serious and depressing. How many of you as children were introduced to limericks and rhymes in the playground, often ones you couldn't repeat to your parents!

If you can write a poem to make us laugh, whether it be a limerick or revolting rhyme, why not share it with others in a unique and once in a lifetime experience. Poetry doesn't have to be melodramatic; it doesn't have to carry a cryptic message; it can just make us laugh, as this is one of the most valuable emotions a person has. After all laughter helps the medicine go down.

So sit back and create a piece that will make us laugh, giggle and even cry time after time.

I sat next to the Duchess at tea;
It was just as I feared it would be:
Her rumblings abdominal
Were truly phenomenal,
And everyone thought it was me!
