Short Story Themes

Below are some ideas for your short stories.
We also welcome short stories on any theme for consideration

Mystery

Are you a big fan of mystery writers such as Agatha Christie? Do you enjoy working out who dunnit? Well if you answered ‘Yes’ to either of the above then why not try your hand at writing a mystery story yourself? Send them in to us and have readers up and down the country trying to solve the mystery.

Romance

Can you write a story that is good enough to melt the coldest of hearts? We are asking you to create a story that is about love, the ups and downs the highs and lows and all aspects of romance, because love is not always easy no matter how much effort you put in. Let your sentimental side run away with itself and write a story reflecting what true love really is.

Horror

The scare factor is a must have in this particular theme, you must have the ability to make a grown man scream like a little girl! If you can devise a story that will leave readers shaking with fright then we want to read it. We want full on gore and terror and an interesting storyline to maintain the chills. If you fancy yourself as the next Stephen King this may be just what you’re looking for. Our editorial team is waiting to say arrgghh!

Stories for Children

Do you fancy yourself as the next J K Rowling, Philip Pullman or Jaqueline Wilson? If so then send us a story to appeal to children or young adults. We will be looking for stories that are original and unique whilst capturing the heart and imagination of its reader.

If you can create believable imaginary worlds, characters, and events then why not give this theme a go.

Sci-Fi

Had any close encounters of the third kind recently? Are those crop circles in your garden just a little bit too strange? Or do you just have an avid imagination that runs away with itself from time to time? No one can be sure what is living on the other planets around us, we all have our thoughts and opinions. It is interesting to know what other peoples views are on this subject and that’s why we invite you to send us a short story based on sci-fi, if you can create another planet with your mind and put it to paper then it is most definitely welcome here. Is the truth really out there or is it a matter of belief?

Crime

Crime is a major part of life in today’s world. It is around us every where we look and we are influenced by the law and its consequences every day. That is why we have chosen this as a theme to base your stories on, we can all relate to crime, we all see it and we all hear about it. If you have a particularly interesting recollection of a crime being committed then it would be captivating to hear about it. Maybe you have thought of the perfect crime that you would like to share with us, all ideas are welcomed by us.

A Twist in the Tale

For this theme we want you to write a story that will engross us from the start and then right at the end astound us with something that is completely unexpected.

The main part of your story should deliberately lay a false trail, planting a seed in the reader’s mind as to what the ending could be. Then when the ending hits them they will be completely taken by surprise - the bigger the twist the better.

Comedy

Do you have the ultimate funny gene? Can you make a dull story into a bright and cheery fun tale? New fiction invites you to send us a side-splitting story that will have the readers in tears of laughter, it doesn’t have to be realistic, the more far fetched the better. If you think you have got what it takes to entertain a nation of readers with your wit then have a go and send it in to us.

Naughty but Nice (18+ Only)

This theme is certainly not for the more prudish of you out there. Whilst not looking for pure smut, we are extending the boundaries by asking you to try your hand at some seriously racy romance. To get an idea of what we’re looking for then some recommended reading is ‘Lady Chatterly’s Lover’ (by D H Lawrence) or books by Jilly Cooper or Jackie Collins.

The trick is to combine it all - romance, passion and a compelling storyline into your final piece.
