has

for
Leonard’s
poem
‘One
Of
The
Fallen’.
Read
below:
One
Of
The
Fallen
Five
fingers
on
the
pulse
of
life,
each
with
its
own
peculiar
role.
One
felt
the
warmth
of
something
young,
the
chill
of
something
old.
One
smelt
the
freshness
of
the
spring,
and,
too,
the
dying
rose.
One
saw
the
mornings,
sharp
and
clear,
how
soft
the
evenings
glowed.
One
tasted
bitterness
and
joy,
and
soft
lips
in
the
dark.
One
heard
the
high
notes
of
the
lark,
the
low
tones
of
the
chapel
bell,
the
children’s
voices
in
the
park,
the
violent
moments
that
were
hell,
and
then
.
.
.
it
heard
the
call!
He
was
afraid
and
wrapped
his
fingers
’round
his
weak
and
feeble
frame
protesting
he
was
much
too
young,
protesting
he
was
not
to
blame,
protesting
that
this
hand
of
his
was
there
to
honour
and
fulfil
.
.
.
and
nurture.
Not
to
kill.
But
once
again,
there
came
the
call!
Oh
life,
once
cheap,
but
precious
now!
Oh
tender
heart
that
sobs
and
sighs
don’t
lose
him
while
protesting
how
he’s
much
too
young
to
die
.
.
.
but
high
above
his
crumbling
wall
there
comes
again
the
call!
Five
fingers
that
five
senses
were,
were
led
away,
now
slumber
with
comrades
in
the
fields
of
France.
Just
rank
and
name
and
number!
