George Coombs is an associate lecturer with The Open University and also a qualified Aromatherapist with a small practice in Sussex. His winning poem, ‘White Flowers’ was originally published in the Poetry Now anthology ‘Someone Special’.
I've been writing poetry all my life as well as occasional short stories and articles and have had a few things published in magazines etc but not a great deal. My association with Forward Press goes back about four years and several poems have appeared in anthologies and I've had three booklets published in the ‘Little Books’ series.
My late mother was wheelchair disabled with arthritis and I was her carer for a long time, I did her treatment, everything. Mum passed away nearly four years ago and all my poetry during that period has been dedicated to her and in loving memory of her. Mum always displayed wonderful courage, dignity and good humour in very difficult circumstances she is much missed by me and all who knew her. I'm so thrilled to receive this award and to do so in memory of Mum.
Thank you.

This is George’s £3,000 winning poem White Flowers:
White Flowers
White flowers
I bring
Recalling hours
We spent together
In laughter,
In tears.
White, pure
Like the gift
You gave of
Yourself, flower
Of your personhood
Unfolds now
Beautified in memory.
Seasons turn,
Warmth and calmness
Touch me here
Where you rest in
The heart of holiness
Reaching me
Quietly and in peace.
