Samantha Walsh

Winner of our Top 5 Poets of March 2005 Online Competition

I'm a 39 year old mum to three wonderful daughters and live in the West Yorkshire region. I used to write poetry many years ago in my school days but only recently began writing again. Most of my work is based upon the moods and feelings I have felt over the last couple of years. Due to suffering from depression over many years in my life I have now found a way to put my thoughts down on paper which is great
therapy for me, I would recommend this to anyone, it's like writing my life story, putting it into rhyme and sharing my experiences which normally would be a hard thing for me to do. Winning this has certainly brightened up my day and also thanks to Forward Press I have had many of my poems published in various anthologies. I'd recommend poetry writing to anyone. Thanks again and I hope you all enjoy my work.

The Butterfly

You opened your wings,
A wonderful sight,
A spectrum of colour,
A joyous delight.

A beautiful creature,
So happy and free,
No problems or worries,
I wish it was me.

You hovered and fluttered,
And danced all around,
Then no ... Without warning,
You fell to the ground.

I watched with dismay,
As you struggled to cope,
Your wing was all broken,
You hadn't a hope.

I thought about life,
How you live and you die,
This beautiful creature,
No longer would fly.

No longer so happy,
No longer so free,
This unhappy creature,
Reminds me of me.

Final Farewell

Hid in the shadows,
Alone by a tree,
She waited and watched,
She wanted to see.

The air was so crisp,
There was snow on the ground,
They began to arrive,
There wasn't a sound.

They stood by the graveside,
With tears in their eyes;
Three people were mourning,
That was a surprise.

They had told her they loved her,
They had told her they cared,
"We'll always be here,
whenever you’re scared".

But no, when she'd cut,
And let out a cry,
They couldn't be bothered,
They had left her to die.

She walked up to the headstone;
She wanted to see,
What words they had chosen,
Chosen for me.

"AND NOW YOU HAVE LEFT US, YOU GAVE UP THE FIGHT,
WE TRIED ALL WE COULD, TO SHOW YOU THE LIGHT,"
IN HEAVEN THEY'LL WATCH YOU,
AN ANGEL YOU'LL BE,
YOU'LL ALWAYS BE HAPPY,
YOU'LL ALWAYS BE FREE".

The End

Looking back at my life,
What do I see?
Nothing but hurt,
And pain within me.

There's nothing to tell,
There's nothing to say,
No happy events,
There's only dismay.

A book with no words,
My story would be,
With empty, white pages,
And nothing to see.

What could I write,
When my life’s such a mess,
And who'd want to read it ,
They couldn't care less.

There's only two words,
I could put in my book,
I think you can guess them,
Come on , take a look...........................THE END......

The Voice in My Head

I sat in the corner, scared and cold,
The voices were hurting my head,
Each noise like an echo, surrounding my mind,
The sounds of the things that I dread.

Make them go, can't take much more,
Why is this happening to me,
I'm sick of this life, of torture and pain,
What can I do to be free.

Want out of this mess, just want to escape,
For things to be normal again,
Get rid of the scars, get rid of the pills,
Be happy for once now and then.

So why do I smile when the cut is so deep,
When all I can see is the blood,
The thought makes me shiver but not from the cold
The feeling I got was so good.

This voice that took over my thoughts once again,
The one that is making me cry,
Cut deeper it said and then it will end.
And then I will leave you to die.

Spoken Words

You think your ok,
You think you've done well,
Your feeling much better,
Your out of this hell,
You've resisted the urge,
Your cuts are now gone,
Your tears have dried up,
Your feeling so strong.

A few spoken words,
Can send you right back,
Back down the slope,
Along the wrong track,
You said you don’t love me,
You can't carry on,
You don’t want to see me,
Your love has now gone.

I gave you my heart,
I gave you my soul,
I gave you my life,
Two halves make a whole,
I'll try to stay calm,
I'll try to keep sane,
But as I well know,
I'll cut once again...
