I
have been
writing poetry
since I was 12
years old. I am
from
Trinidad, and I
came to the U.S.
when I was 11
years old.
Poetry has
been very dear
to me, thus
every poem I
write seems to
help me live
one more day in
this wretched
world. I am 22
years old now,
and quite
frankly I could
not imagine my
life without
poetry. Thank
you.
Poet's
Duty
Bring
forth to the
consciousness
All that exists
in the dark
Expose the flame
of beauty
In things that
only had a spark
Illuminate a
simple life
Making busy
humans see
Things we take
for granted
Are as precious
as can be
Free the scenes
of nature
From the
dying ways of
time
Stimulate
imaginative
forces
On great and
shiftless minds
Transcribe the
songs of nature
So human beings
can sing
Lend a hand of
wisdom
To the misguided
rule of kings
Connect the
orphan souls
To nature,
mother of all
birth
But keep
yourself removed
From
divine and
private work.
A poet is an
intermediary
Who does not
interfere
Like a pompous
ordained priest
Sitting too high
in his chair
Let morals be
your vehicle
On your path to
love and beauty
This definition
I declare
In truth, a
poet's duty.
