Aderemi Adegbite

Aderemi Adegbite, a Nigerian based in Lagos has engraved his name in the literary environ with his poetry that is purely African. His works always have an undertone of African consciousness and some dwell on the values, arts and culture of the entire Black race. Most of his works have been published abroad in different anthologies alongside works of literary giants (renowned poets) in the United Kingdom and Journals in Nigeria.

The reorientation of the African youth is the hallmark of Aderemi’s works. Reasons being that, he believes it is through them that the biggest Cultural Revolution can be fought and won.

A member of Creative Family International and Pen-circle of the University of Lagos, both are literary organizations. And currently, he is the General Publicity Secretary, Association of Nigeria Authors, Lagos Chapter (ANA Lagos).

The Black Pride

Be proud my child, be proud
Of your endowed black shining skin,
Glistering like the sparkling stars
Above in the glooming sky
At arrival of the glowing moon.

With pride my child, with pride
Must you display your beauty
Along cities and streets
Of Africa, land of bounty and beauty,
From coast to coast in the wider world.

You are black-skinned my child,
Yes you are dark-skinned,
Yet the sparkling makes it lovely
Whilst gleaming with sprinkles of adoration
Across the vast coasts of nations.

My child, be proud with your pride,
For black, dark shimmering skin,
To the world is symbolized as power,
Strength, manipulation of creativity,
Is an unquantifiable paragon of beauty.

Attached Souls

Sincerely, it’s sad;
Heart-arching
Soul-dampening
Hearing “Farewell” bid
By the beloved,
Truly it’s bad;
Tearing apart
This touching attachment
Of utmost feeling: love!
It’s damned fearful;
Listening to the distressed,
Agonized, pained and solemn
Expressions of a heart
Beset by beating confessions.
It’s indeed madness;
Tearing apart attached souls,
Sailing across life’s coasts
In love’s vessel!

Remember

Remember, honey,
Behind the trees
At twilight
When persistently
You swung
Your tiny thigh
Whenever I tickled;
And with humorous smile
You clung
Your electrified flesh
On to me, dearly,
With a lasting kiss.

Remember daughter
Of Kenneth Knight:
Our memorable games,
Our fantastic dreams,
Our fearful fantasies
In the depth of your father’s
Courtyard,

Remember…
Remember…
Remember…

Traveller

Traveller I was
Long before last time;
Once again I become
A traveller!
A traveller I am
Sailing in search
Of my second-half
Across oceans and seas
From coast to coast
Along cold dawn
Beneath scorching sun
At noon,
And the warm evening.
I have travelled
With blanket of sorrow,
Jacket of joy
Enshrined in my heart's
Pouch,
Like a hunch back.
Only in search
Of my beloved!

Distant Admiration

At a distance it glitters
Her moist and ebony skin
Under the semi-dark sky
Early in the morning
Along silent Adeorike-Abeke street.

From a distance I was captivated
By her majestic catwork
Towards my path along the street;
Her long straight, spotless and smooth legs
Piercing through her three quarter skirt
Engross my heart with passion.

Distantly, I tremble...
My heart's desired angle
And her suavity
Unleash eccentric emotion in me.
By her simple...admired attire;
Blended with her authentic skin colour
I am enchanted from a distance
Along noiseless Adeorike-Abeke Street .

Solitary Admiration

Since my first glance
Of the lady like a gazelle
Along the silent street
I have hoped
To meet her again.

Since the first gaze—
My solitary admiration of her ebony figure
Along Adeorike-Abeke street,
Passionately have I scripted
My heart’s sequential expressions:

“Let me fill your heart
with bundles of gazania flower,
let me into your warm arms and
hover my lips over yours
in the confines of my gazebo.”

“Let me have a taste
of your succulent breast--
a sweet cherry in the forest--
to bedew my rusty heart
for being in love again!”

Severely, Salewa hissed
And grasped my thigh,
Slowly she clung her red-lips
Tighter to my subtly moistened lips
Along the silent street.
