Whispers
Do you hear the whispers rustling in a room,
those partly shadowed messages, soft secrets in a womb?
Can you spot the twinkle or the tear in someone’s eye,
the rising blush upon a cheek, the reason for a sigh?
Wonder at a cryptic smile, veiled by fluttering hands,
floating like a mirage in the heat of desert sands?
Do you ever hurt inside with another person’s pain,
feel their bitter anguish, drenched in icy rain?
Can you share the agony of a bleeding broken heart,
repair the jagged pieces of those fate pulled apart?
Provide an arm to lean on, be a shelter from the cold,
an unexpected friendship, something warm to hold?
Do you listen to your doubts in the lonely hours of night,
asking awkward questions as to wrong or right?
Can you hope to justify the things that you have done,
why you chose to stay and fight or why you chose to run?
Are you such an innocent, white as virgin snow,
or do the stains need washing, do you think they show?
Do you wink at passers-by as you walk along life’s path,
be the cause of happiness, the one that makes them laugh?
Can you destroy their devils with the arrows of soft smiles,
while travelling on to destiny for your allotted miles?
The source of wondrous legends to fill your children’s dreams,
a knight upon a unicorn that gallops to their screams
