John Gilbert Slade
Alone Again
A time, a place, a brief embrace
a kiss, some tears - departure nears
the train now makes to leave
the sadness, the tear-dressed smile
the touch of hands for just a while
whispered endearments as parting comes
quickening heartbeat, like frantic drums
emotional turmoil, utter despair
and loneliness engulfs us there
the hesitant last wave or two
as the lonely platform fades from view
her slightness now is hard to see
a disappearing shadow, beautiful she
and this train now is taking me
too far away for me to bear
this painful parting isn’t fair
I needed time to say still more
to talk, to touch, to kiss and such
to hug and hold her close to me
to fix her in my memory, to recall
when we’re apart, separation breaks my heart.
