Checkmate in 5 Moves
I talked with God today
He's quite an ordinary bloke really
Not what you would expect
The sort of guy you exchange a smile with in the street as you pass
In vague recognition
There were not trumpet fanfares
No epiphany; no burning bush or rending of curtains
Just me and Him
Over a coffee
Playing chess
He didn't say much
I made the opening gambit
'I don't know if i belive in you,' I said
'That's funny', He replied, 'I was about to say the same thing'
He carefully moves His pawn in reply to my opening move
Looking at me all the time
I advance my kinght
'My problem is that so much pain has been caused because of you,' I offer
Without looking down
His bishop slices through the gap in a diagonal slash across the board
'I could say the same,' He replied quietly
My knight flees in fear and confusion
'But didn't I create you to explain all the things I don't understand?' I ask
His queen advances menacingly across the board
I barely notice it
'I thought i made you,' was His reply
I push my knight's pawn forward
I know i am trapped
His kinght advances to support His bishop
'I am confused,' I say, 'I don't know what to believe'
I see a glimmer of hope and advance my bishop to threaten His
He smiles and His fingertips meet as He fixes my gaze
'There's not a lot of difference between you and me my friend
Your problem is that you don't believe.........in yourself
You could have won this game'
His queen removes my pawn
'Checkmate!'
