John
Frith was the first English
martyr to be burnt for
publishing Reformation
doctrines, in a century when
hundreds of Christians were
being imprisoned, tortured,
strangled, and burnt by
other Christians who did not
agree with their views. In
challenging the Church's
teaching on purgatory, for
example, Frith was treading
on dangerous ground,
because, from that teaching,
the Church created the fear
that gave it power and
control over people's lives,
enabling the Church to amass
great wealth.
The
Author
Brian
Raynor, M.A. Dip Ed., was,
like John Frith, at King's
College, Cambridge, and has
lived for the last thirty
years in the Sevenoaks area.
He taught mathematics in
Ghana for twelve years,
before moving back to Kent,
where he taught at Sevenoaks
School for twenty-two years.
His
interest in Frith began
when, at Cambridge, he read
in D'Aubigne's History of
the Reformation about
'the mathematician from
King's'. This interest was
resurrected in 1971 when he
became Frith housemaster at
Sevenoaks School.
He has
had several mathematics
books and teachers' guides
published.
Brian is
now retired, and lives with
his wife in Otford,
Sevenoaks. His interests
include, playing the piano
and organ, singing, handbell
ringing, bird-watching, and
walking. He is also a Church
of England Reader.
